Can you call a peanut butter and jelly sandwich a peanut butter sandwich?

My parents just had an argument about whether or not you can call a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich just a Peanut Butter sandwich…
What do you think?

Since it’s generally understood you don’t have just peanut butter or just jelly between two pieces of bread, it’s fine to call it a peanut butter sandwich.

  • Steve says:

if it has both you call it by both names duh

  • Wheexer bai says:

If it’s with jelly, it’s a peanut butter jelly sandwich.
If it’s just peanut butter, then it’s a peanut butter sandwich.
    Now i’m hungry :)

  • Johanna says:

if it has peanut butter and jelly than its a peanut butter and jelly sandwich

if it only has peanut butter
than its a peanut butter sandwich

  • Courtney says:

No, because it has jelly. if it just had peanut butter then you can call it a peanut butter sandwich.

  • enid says:

well, sure, you could. you could also call it fried chicken. either way you’d be wrong.

‘hey, can i have a peanut butter sandwich?’
    ’sure, here you go.’
*takes a bite* ”aaaa! this is a peanut butter and jelly sandwich! i just wanted peanut butter! i’m deathly allergic to jelly! call an ambulance fast!’

  • Ms. Minerva says:

Well, one calls a ham sandwich a ham sandwich regardless of what kind of condiment is added. One doesn’t usually say a ham and mayonnaise sandwich.

I think of jelly as a condiment….therefore, to be correct, I would say that one would call a sandwich having peanut butter as the most substantive ingredient simply a peanut butter sandwich….regardless of what condiment is used to enhance the peanut butter.

  • Drewkulele says:

Well, you can call it "George" if you want to, of course, but I think that if it has jelly on it, then its official title is: "Peanut Butter AND Jelly Sandwich!"

I mean, if you had a sandwich that had both ham and cheese on it, you wouldn’t call it a Ham Sandwich, you’d call it a Ham AND Cheese Sandwich, right? So the same applies here!

  • Canadian19 says:

    Think of it this way:

A Peanut-Butter and Jelly sandwich is just a Peanut-Butter sandwich with jelly.

For example, when you go to a fast-food restaurant with a friend and he asks you what you’re eating, you’ll just say "A cheeseburger". There is no need to say "A cheeseburger with ketchup, pickles, tomatoes, bacon…" You could, but just "cheesburger" is fine.
