How long do I have to keep my arm elevated after hand surgery?

I had surgery on my right hand ring finger five days ago. The doctor said to keep it elevated as much as possible. The swelling seems to be gone, do I still have to keep it elevated? My post op isn’t for 9 more days. Also I have a lot of bruising on the knucles of my other fingers. Is that normal?

It’s for the first day only :)
The idea is to prevent swelling caused by the pooling of fluids to the site of the surgery during the surgery from the effect of the anaesthetic and muscle paralytic. If there is no swelling during the first day, there won’t be any after that.

Ur doctor shouldv’e been more specific :)

I had my arm and hand operated on, I had a ten inch bar put in my hand and arm to keep it straight due to arthritis so it would stay straight, I would watch tv at night with it on a pillow but normally that’s all you can do unless it swells. You can’t walk around with your arm in the air now, can you ?
