Why do people respect others who learned a foreign language?

I remember as a kid, there was a French African guy who spoken English and I respected him a lot. Or my Physician who is from Iran speaks perfect English and I give her more respect. Why so much respect for a foreign language?

More foreigners speak a second language (or more) than people in the US. It is an admirable trait because it indicates that the person is dedicated to learning the language and culture of another country. It is unfortunate that teaching a second language in the US is not begun at an earlier age and continued throughout school.

  • Biff says:

Because it takes a lot of time and effort to learn a second language.
