I have a 1996 Mercury Sable. I cannot start the engine when the car is in park, but when I shift it down to drive (not overdrive) it starts up. I can drive the car in reverse and regular drive, but the car will not go when I attempt to shift it into overdrive. Transmission fluid level looks normal. It seems like my transmission may be completely shot, but I am hoping that’s not the case! Is there any other reasons why the gear shift would act this way?
Why won’t my car start in park and will start when shifted to drive?

First we start with minor things, check and change your automatic transmission fluid, it might be too low or too dirty already. If after changing the ATF and still the problem is there, bring it to a good mechanic, they will decide what to do next if they can repair the transmission or replace it for a new one. I hope this helps!
You need your transmission serviced or at worst case replaced. There is a switch that enable you to start the car in P. Obviously that is out of whack and it happens in D.
Even though your oil level are ok the transmission still needs to be adjusted as bands can slip.
Sounds like the linkage. Should’t be too bad .
i bet that the problem is in the neutral safety switch. it disables the starter in all gears aside from park and neutral. in your situation, it sounds like that switch is out of adjustment. nothing internally wrong withe the AXOD transmission, overdrive could be a different problem though, but likely that a computer input through that same switch could be the source of the problem. take care of the bigger problem first and look into adjusting that switch.
range switch located on top of trans under linkage arm.
