How do I transfer my fish and aquarium rocks safely to a larger tank?

I have a ten gallon fresh water aquarium and just purchased a new 20 gallon. What is the best and safest way to move my fish to the new aquarium? I have a good algae and water balance in my present aquarium. I have a couple guppies, tetras, algae eaters, molly’s and algae eaters.
Yes, thanks. I did say algae eater twice. I was in a hurry.

I always set up the new tank first and match the water to the old tanks water after it goes thru it’s cycle. then I transfer the fish over slowly a couple every week. It may take a while but I feel it’s the safest way and gives your new tank time to produce some algae for your algae eater too.

  • Mike says:

Take a large container and scoop out your fish individually in that container and fill your large tank with water and take the fish individually from the container through net and put them into the large tank.

I would fill the 20 gal tank half way, and get the water ready for fish (ph and all that jazz). Then I would pour the water in from the first tank slowly and when it gets low, transfer the fish individually with a net. Then slowly pour the rest of the water in the 20 gal tank.

    you said algae eaters twice.

Fill a large bucket/bowl with water
Scoop out your fish and place into bowl
    Put fish into the tank
Put algae and remaining Accessories into the other tank

Get a container and fill it with the water from your present fish tank, then add all the fish etc.
take out all the rocks etc. and set up the new fish tank, save as much as the old water that you can, and then what ever more water you need add it in at the end, and make sure the water is room temperature.
this way the fish etc. won’t get a shock from all the chlorine
